Legitimacy of Marriage of Elderly Couple Under Scrutiny Due to Lack of Legal Documentation

The marital status of the oldest couple known to be alive has been called into question by governmental authorities.  The couple has been unable to produce the proper official certificates that are required by law.  The man asserts that his alleged wife simply appeared one day while he was taking a much needed nap.  She backs up his story, and they have jointly petitioned for married legal status based on claims that “God told them to never leave each other.”

Many neighbors vouch for the couple, professing to be their descendants.  Other townsfolk admit to remember having always seen the man and woman around, but don’t recall where they came from.  The man is known for treating everyone in a grandfatherly way.  Some young mothers report being put off by the familiarity with which the woman approaches them, but are impressed with her insight into their troubles with raising their children.

Stories of a special garden guarded by a flame of some sort seem to have been circulated by this elderly couple, bringing into question their mental stability.  While many people in their neighborhood say they have heard the story, when interviewed, both the man and woman were reticent about expounding on the details.  After implying that it was a very personal story, they also made a comment about no one really believing them, stating this made it pointless to repeat.  Psychological testing may be a part of procedures used to determine what action should be taken regarding the couple.

All of this has lead to complications for their children, who although grown and well established in various businesses, now have to allay fears that they belong to some secret underground band plotting to overthrow the government.  Deportation has been openly discussed by vocal leaders of the various communities.
