Summary: The scribes claim that Jesus blasphemes for saying the paralytic man’s sins are forgiven, so Jesus heals the man to show them he has that authority. Matthew is called to follow Jesus, who then proceeds to have dinner with many tax collectors, leading to the Pharisees getting a teaching on mercy. John’s disciples ask about fasting. Several more instances of healing are recounted. The Pharisees accuse Jesus of casting out demons by “the prince of demons.” Jesus is moved with compassion for the multitudes and tells his disciples to pray for laborers for the harvest.
