Summary: Moses goes in to talk to Pharaoh for the first time. Pharaoh asks the question he will get a clear answer to: “Who is Yahweh, that I should listen to his voice to let Israel go?” Then Pharaoh dramatically increases the workload of the Israelites. Moses complains to Yahweh that things aren’t working, but Yahweh patiently answers that now they will see what He will do. In an interlude, the lineage of Moses and Aaron is given, to make it clear who they are. The wonders begin with the rods being turned into serpents. The Egyptian magicians can duplicate the signs up until the lice. However, even though they duplicate the first signs, their enchantments are shown to be much inferior. The plague of flies makes Pharaoh finally agree to let the Israelites go sacrifice, but as soon as Moses prays for the flies to be gone, Pharaoh hardens his heart again.
